Practice Team

 

 

Dr Fiona Porter MBBCh DFFP

  • Dr Porter is our Senior Partner
  • Originally from Pontypridd, Dr Porter qualified from the University of Wales, College of Medicine in 1997.
  • She joined the Bridgend GP vocational training scheme, and did both of her training posts here at Cwm Garw before joining as a partner in 2001.
  • During her training she gained a diploma in family planning (DFFP), She later did  diplomas in Diabetes, Coronary Heart Diease in Primary Care & Respiratory Medicine.
  • Her areas of medical interest are Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, & Psychiatry.
  • She is the computer lead for the practice, responsible for the clinical computers and the website.
  • She also oversees the running of both of our dispensaries in Bettws and Llangeinor.
  • She has an interest in British Sign Language, having passed levels 1 and 2.
  • Away from work, she is often to be seen on stage in amateur dramatics and enjoys reading.

Dr Nick Williams MBBCh

  • Originally from Swansea, Dr Williams qualified from the University of Wales, College of Medicine in 1999.
  • Following his initial hospital posts, he trained in the Carmarthen GP vocational training scheme.
  • After qualifying as a GP, he worked as a salaried GP in Cymer.
  • Enjoying the valley life and community spirit, he ventured to pastures new with us here in Cwm Garw in 2006.
  • His main areas of medical interest are diabetes and cardiovascular disease. His is also the prescribing lead at the practice.
  • Away from work, he is a keen amateur golfer, and a dab hand at snooker!

Dr Katy Painter MBBCH (Hons), MRCGP, DFSRH, DRCOG    

   

  • Dr Painter joined us in 2016.
  • Originally from Essex, she qualified from the University of Wales, College of Medicine in 2009.
  • She joined the Bridgend GP vocational training scheme, and did one of her training posts here at Cwm Garw, the other at a GP surgery in Cowbridge.
  • She has diplomas in Family Planning and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and she is GP trainer.
  • Her areas of medical interest are palliative medicine and Women's Health.
  • Away from work, she avoids relaxation running after her two sons.                           

 

Dr Elisabeth Thomas MBBCH, MRCGP, DRCOG

  •  Dr Thomas is originally from Cornwall.
  •  She attended university in Cardiff, qualifying in 2011, and worked her foundation years in the Princess of Wales Hospital, (Bridgend), and University Hospital of Wales, (Cardiff).
  •  Dr Thomas did her GP training in Neath and Port Talbot, and gained her Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as well as her Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare during her training. 
  •  She joined Cwm Garw practice in 2019. 
  •  Dr Thomas has three young boys, so outside of work she enjoys spending time with her family, and going to the beach in all weather! 

 

Dr Rebecca Robinson MBBCh, BSc (Hons.), BN (Hons.), MRCGP, DFRSH

  • Dr Robinson is from Llantrisant. She graduated from University of Wales College of Medicine with a Bachelor of Nursing (Hons.) degree in 2002. Whilst working within intensive care she undertook a specialist degree Bachelor of Science (Hons.) Acute and Critical Care graduating in 2011. Following this she studied graduate entry medicine at Swansea School of Medicine and graduated in 2016.
  • She completed her foundation training at the Princess of Wales Hospital and GP specialty training on the Bridgend Vocational Training Scheme.
  • Whilst undertaking GP training, Dr Robinson completed a Diploma in Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health and has a letter of competence in Intra-uterine techniques.
  • Dr Robinson joined Cwm Garw Practice in 2022. Her main areas of interest include women’s health, diabetes and mental health.
  • Dr Robinson has five children and enjoys running with her local running club when she is able to find the time!

 

Dr Siwan Edwards MBBCh, MRCGP

  • Dr Edwards joined us as a Salaried GP in 2023.
  • She grew up in Bridgend before moving to Cardiff for University.
  • Dr Edwards graduated from Cardiff University in 2017 and completed her foundation training in the Princess of Wales Hospital (Bridgend), Withybush Hospital (Haverfordwest) and Glangwili Hospital (Carmarthen).
  • She joined the Bridgend GP Training scheme in 2020, working in surgeries in Maesteg and Pencoed before joining our practice in her final year.
  • Dr Edwards is a fluent Welsh speaker.
  • Away from work, she is a keen musician who regularly performs with an orchestra and choir based in Cardiff.

As we are a teaching practice in addition to the partners, we have 1 or 2 registrars who are qualified doctors looking at furthering their training to become a General Practitioner.

  • Sister Samuel & Sister Brown run a number of clinics, including Asthma, Diabetes, Travel Advice, Smears, Child Immunisation & Diet advice as well as other treatment room duties.

  • Mrs Barnett covers a range of duties, including Blood sample taking, Blood pressure checks, New patient checks, ECGs, spirometry (breathing tests) & height / weight monitoring.
