Mounjaro Weight-Loss Injections

Cwm Garw Practice are starting to see a sharp increase in enquiries about weight loss drugs announced in the media – in-particular Mounjaro. We have also seen an increase in patients accessing weight loss injections through private providers.

The Welsh Government have restricted prescribing to a Tier 3 weight loss strategy which means neither primary nor secondary care is allowed to prescribe until a patient has tried extensive weight loss support through the NHS. We ask that you DO NOT contact your GP surgery to try and obtain Mounjaro for weight loss as your GPs cannot prescribe Mounjaro for weight loss on the NHS.

It remains the private providers responsibility to support any prescriptions or tests required at the expense of the patient.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide), a weight-loss injection, is approved for managing obesity in Wales, but access is restricted. It is available through specialist weight management services and is not prescribed by GPs. Patients with a BMI over 45kg/m2 who have completed a lifestyle intervention program are eligible for referral to a specialist service, where Mounjaro may be prescribed in limited circumstances . The medication is intended for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and it helps regulate appetite, reducing hunger and cravings.

Many thanks
